Paint Mixing Ratio Calculator
Calculate the exact quantity of paint, hardener and reducer required for mixing.
Mixing Results
How the Calculation Works
Step 1: Calculate the total number of parts:
Total Parts = Paint / Primer + Hardener / Activator + Reducer / Thinner
Step 2: Calculate each component:
Component Quantity = Total Mixture × Component Parts ÷ Total Parts
For example, with a mixing ratio of 4 : 1 : 1 and a total mixture of 6 L:
Paint / Primer = 6 × 4 ÷ 6 = 4 L
Hardener / Activator = 6 × 1 ÷ 6 = 1 L
Reducer / Thinner = 6 × 1 ÷ 6 = 1 L
Paint Mixing Ratio Calculator
The CoatXpert Paint Mixing Ratio Calculator helps painters, coating professionals, automotive refinishing technicians, and laboratory users calculate the exact quantity of each coating component required for a specified total mixture. It is designed for common coating systems using Paint / Primer, Hardener / Activator, and Reducer / Thinner.
What Is a Paint Mixing Ratio?
A paint mixing ratio defines the proportion in which different coating components must be mixed before application. Common examples include 1:1, 2:1, 4:1, and 4:1:1.
For example, a 4:1 ratio means that four parts of Paint / Primer are mixed with one part of Hardener / Activator. A 4:1:1 ratio means four parts Paint / Primer, one part Hardener / Activator, and one part Reducer / Thinner.
The correct mixing ratio is important because changing the proportion of the components can affect curing, viscosity, adhesion, appearance, hardness, durability, and final coating performance.
1K and 2K Coating Systems
The calculator can also handle coating systems where a hardener is not required.
For example, a typical 1K system can be entered as:
1 : 0 : 0
Here, Paint / Primer is 1 part, Hardener / Activator is 0 parts, and Reducer / Thinner is 0 parts.
A typical 2K system could be:
4 : 1 : 0
while a system requiring reducer could be:
4 : 1 : 1
This makes the calculator suitable for different coating formulations and application requirements.
How the Calculator Works
The calculator first adds all the ratio parts to determine the Total Parts.
Total Parts = Paint / Primer + Hardener / Activator + Reducer / Thinner
It then calculates the quantity of each component based on the required total mixture.
Component Quantity = Total Mixture × Component Parts ÷ Total Parts
For example, if the required total mixture is 6 litres and the mixing ratio is 4:1:1:
- Paint / Primer = 4 L
- Hardener / Activator = 1 L
- Reducer / Thinner = 1 L
- Total Mixture = 6 L
The calculator can display quantities in either litres (L) or millilitres (mL).
Why Correct Mixing Ratio Matters
Following the manufacturer’s specified mixing ratio is essential for consistent coating performance. Too much or too little hardener can affect curing and film properties, while incorrect reducer or thinner quantity can change viscosity, spray characteristics, drying behaviour, film build, and appearance.
For professional coating applications, always use the manufacturer’s Technical Data Sheet (TDS) for the recommended mixing ratio and application instructions.
Ratio by Volume or Weight
This calculator is designed for mixing ratios by volume. However, some coating manufacturers specify ratios by weight instead.
For example, a product may specify 4:1 by volume but provide a different ratio when measured by weight because the individual components can have different densities.
Therefore, always confirm whether the manufacturer’s specified ratio is by volume or by weight before preparing the mixture.
Important Considerations
The calculated quantity represents the mathematical mixing requirement based on the ratio entered. Actual coating requirements may also depend on application method, viscosity, temperature, substrate condition, equipment, and manufacturer’s instructions.
For accurate professional application, always follow the product manufacturer’s recommended mixing, thinning, induction, pot-life, and application procedures.
The CoatXpert calculator is intended as an engineering and preparation aid and should be used together with the coating manufacturer’s technical documentation.
